Freezer not freezing? What usually causes it
Four causes cover most calls — and none of them is the compressor.
- Frosted evaporator (defrost failure)
Frost builds up on the coil behind the back panel and blocks the airflow. The defrost heater, thermostat or timer/board has failed.
- Evaporator fan not running
The coil is cold but the air isn't moving. Freezer quiet when the door switch is pressed? Often the fan motor.
- Dirty condenser or dead condenser fan
The unit can't shed heat, runs constantly and still warms up. A cleaning or a fan motor — not a compressor.
- Door gasket or overloading
A torn seal or a door that doesn't close lets warm air in all day. Check for frost around the edges first.
Quick check before you call: is the condenser at the bottom or back covered in dust, and does the door close tight all the way round? If both look fine, it’s time for a diagnostic.

Compressor and refrigerant (Freon) work
Federal law requires EPA 608 certification to touch sealed-system refrigerant lines. We refer those specific jobs to a certified partner so you still get a same-day answer — no run-around. Signs it may be sealed-system: a chemical smell near the back or under the unit, or oily residue around the compressor.

Why is my freezer not freezing?
Most often it's a defrost problem: frost builds up on the evaporator coil behind the back panel and blocks the airflow. The other usual causes are a failed evaporator fan, a dirty condenser or dead condenser fan, a torn door gasket, or a thermostat or control board fault. None of those are sealed-system, and all are fixed on a normal visit.
How much does freezer repair cost in NYC?
A freezer that isn't freezing is typically $360 all-in on standard brands and $650 on Sub-Zero-class built-ins. Ice maker repair is typically $410. The diagnostic is $100 ($150 on premium brands), credited to the repair, and the final price is confirmed before work starts.
Do you repair standalone freezers, or only fridge freezers?
Both. We repair upright and chest freezers as well as the freezer section of top, bottom and side-by-side refrigerators and built-in freezer columns.
Is it the compressor?
Usually not. Most freezers that stop freezing have a defrost, fan or condenser problem. True sealed-system work — compressor, refrigerant leak, recharging Freon — requires EPA 608 certification, so we refer those jobs to a certified partner and you still get a same-day answer.
What should I do with the food while I wait?
Keep the door closed — a full freezer holds its temperature for many hours with the door shut. Move the most valuable items to a cooler or a neighbor's freezer if you can, and don't pile warm food in.
