What we don't fix

Refrigerant (Freon) sealed-system repairs

Federal law requires EPA 608 certification to touch sealed-system refrigerant lines. We refer those specific jobs to a certified partner so you still get a same-day answer — no run-around.

The only sign that's a hard “we don't fix” right away:

  • · Chemical / freon smell near the back or under the unit
  • · Visible oily residue around the compressor area

Other symptoms that soundsealed-system but usually aren't — we fix these regularly:

  • · Not cooling — usually defrost issue, evaporator/condenser fan, thermostat, or control board
  • · Leaking water — usually clogged defrost drain, ice-maker line, or door seal
  • · Ice maker broken — sensor, motor, or water line, never sealed-system

When in doubt — book a diagnostic. If the senior expert finds true sealed-system damage on review, we'll hand off without charging the diagnostic.

In detail

The two calls we get most about refrigerators

What actually causes it, what it costs, and what the job looks like.

Refrigerator not cooling

Typically from $400 · 1-2 hours on site

The compressor hums, the light comes on, but the food is warm. In NYC apartments this is a defrost or airflow problem far more often than it is a dead sealed system — which matters, because one is a same-day fix and the other is a new fridge.

What causes it

  • Frozen evaporator coils

The most common one by a wide margin. The defrost heater, timer or sensor fails, ice builds up over the coils, and air stops moving even though the compressor runs fine.

  • Evaporator or condenser fan

Cold air is made in one place and blown where you need it. A seized fan motor means the freezer stays cold while the fridge compartment slowly warms up.

  • Dirty condenser coils

Behind or underneath the unit. Dust and pet hair insulate the coils so heat can't leave — very common in apartments where the fridge sits in a tight alcove.

  • Thermostat or control board

The unit simply stops asking for cooling. Cheap part, quick swap, and easy to confirm on site with a meter.

  • Door seal letting warm air in

If one side of the fridge sweats or the motor never shuts off, check the gasket before anything else.

  • Actual sealed-system failure

Rare, and we're honest about it: a chemical smell or oily residue near the compressor means refrigerant work, which needs EPA 608 certification. We hand those off and don't charge the diagnostic.

Refrigerator leaking water on the floor

Typically from $270 · 1-2 hours on site

A puddle under the fridge is usually one of three things, and none of them are the sealed system. It's also the cheapest common refrigerator repair we do — so it's worth fixing before the water gets under your floorboards or into the apartment downstairs.

What causes it

  • Clogged defrost drain

The number one cause. Food debris blocks the drain tube, meltwater backs up, and it eventually overflows onto the floor — often with ice on the freezer floor as the tell.

  • Cracked or misaligned drain pan

The pan under the unit catches condensate and evaporates it. Crack it, shift it, and the water goes straight to the floor.

  • Ice maker or water line

A loose fitting or split supply line behind the fridge. This one leaks whether or not the fridge is running, which is how you tell it apart from a drain issue.

  • Failed door gasket

Warm humid air gets in, condenses inside, and runs out the door. Look for water on the shelves and a fridge that never stops running.

Questions

Refrigerator FAQ

  • How much does refrigerator repair cost in NYC?

Typical refrigerator repair runs $270–$450 in parts and labor, plus a $100 diagnostic that's credited toward the repair if you proceed.

  • Can you fix Sub-Zero refrigerators?

Yes. We service Sub-Zero, Viking, Miele, Bosch, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Wolf, Thermador, GE, and Whirlpool. Sealed-system (Freon) work requires EPA 608 certification — those jobs we refer to a certified partner so you still get a same-day answer.

  • Same-day service really?

In most cases, yes — if you call before 2pm we'll have a technician at your door the same day in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan below 110th.

  • My refrigerator is leaking water — should I unplug it?

Usually no. Most leaks are a clogged defrost drain or ice-maker line, not an emergency. Put a towel under the unit, keep it running so food stays cold, and book a diagnostic. If water is reaching an outlet, unplug it and call us.

  • Do you repair built-in and counter-depth refrigerators?

Yes. Built-ins, counter-depth, and panel-ready units are common in NYC kitchens — we know how to service them without damaging cabinetry.
