Washer Not Spinning? 7 Causes and What to Check First

By Buyan Danzyuryun, owner of Sprocket Appliance Repair · Published October 11, 2026 · 7 min read

A washer that won't spin is usually protecting itself, not broken. It won't spin with the lid open, with the load bunched on one side, with a drum full of suds, or with water it can't pump out. Check those first — they're free. If the washer still won't spin after that, it's a lid lock, a drive part, a sensor or the motor, and that's a repair.

The 7 causes, cheapest first

1. The lid or door isn't locked

Washers only spin when the lid or door is securely closed and locked. GE puts it plainly: none of its top-load washers will spin with the lid up. Check for a sock caught in the door gasket or something on the lid. If the lid is shut and the washer still acts as if it's open, the lid switch or door lock has failed — a standard part.

2. The load is unbalanced

One heavy item — a bath mat, a comforter, jeans in a small load — throws the drum off balance, and the washer refuses to spin fast or stops altogether. Samsung shows Ub or UE, LG shows UE, GE flashes the spin light. Spread the load out, keep it to about two-thirds of the drum, and try again.

3. Too many suds

Too much detergent, or regular detergent in an HE machine, makes foam that slows the spin. Samsung displays SUd, Whirlpool Sd or Sud, LG SUD. Run an empty rinse, then use measured HE detergent.

4. It can't drain

No washer spins a drum full of water. If water is still sitting in the drum, it's a drain problem: the pump filter on a front-loader, a kinked drain hose, or a hose pushed too far into the standpipe — Whirlpool asks for no more than about 4.5 inches. See our washer won't drain guide.

5. It's a slow-spin cycle — or it's pausing

Delicate and hand-wash cycles spin slowly on purpose, and GE notes that full-size models can pause for up to three minutes before the spin starts. Try a Drain & Spin cycle to see what the washer actually does.

6. The washer isn't level

Old NYC floors often aren't flat. A washer that rocks reads every load as unbalanced. Adjust the feet until it doesn't move when you push on opposite corners.

7. A part has failed

If the lid is locked, the load is even, the drum is empty of water and suds, and the washer still won't spin — or you hear the motor running while the tub stays still — it's mechanical or electrical: the lid lock, a speed sensor, a drive belt or coupler, the motor, or the control board. A recent job of ours: a stacked GE washer-dryer that stopped spinning because the speed sensor had failed; replacing the sensor brought the spin back.

Brand notes

Samsung washer not spinning

Watch the display: Ub/UE means balance, 5C means it can't drain (so it won't spin), SUd means suds. On front-loaders, clean the debris filter at the bottom front. Codes explained in Samsung washer 4C, 5C and dC; repairs on Samsung washer repair.

Whirlpool and Maytag washer not spinning

Maytag is made by Whirlpool, and the checks are the same: lid lock (F5E2 on top-loaders), long-drain codes (F9E1, Ld) that point at the hose and pump, and suds. See Whirlpool washer repair and Maytag washer repair.

GE washer not spinning

Close the lid fully, give it up to three minutes, and redistribute the load if the spin light flashes. If the motor runs and the water drains but the tub won't turn, GE says to call for service. More on GE washer repair.

LG washer not spinning

UE is balance; LE means the motor is overloaded or locked — LG suggests resting the washer 30 minutes, then a smaller load. Repeated LE on normal loads is a repair. See LG washer repair.

What a spin repair costs in NYC

Our standard "not spinning" repair is $325 with parts and labor. If it's the lid or door lock, $360; a drain problem, $290. The diagnostic is $100, credited in full if you go ahead, and you get the price before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my washer not spinning but it drains?

If the water drains but the drum won't spin, look at the lid or door lock, an unbalanced load, and suds first. If those are fine and you can hear the motor running while the tub stays still, GE and other manufacturers say that's a service call — usually a drive part, the lid switch, a speed sensor or the motor.

Why won't my washer spin when it's full of water?

A washer won't spin a drum full of water. If water is still in the drum, it's a drain problem first: a clogged pump filter on a front-loader, a kinked drain hose, or a failing drain pump. Fix the drain and the spin usually comes back.

Can too much detergent stop a washer from spinning?

Yes. Too much detergent, or regular detergent in an HE washer, makes suds that slow or stop the spin. Samsung shows SUd, Whirlpool shows Sd or Sud, LG shows SUD. Run an empty rinse cycle and switch to measured HE detergent.

How do I reset a washer that won't spin?

Unplug it (or switch off the breaker) for a few minutes, plug it back in, and run Drain & Spin or Rinse & Spin with a small, even load. If it still won't spin, the reset isn't the fix — something mechanical or electrical needs a look.

How much does it cost to fix a washer that won't spin in NYC?
